{"id":7807,"date":"2016-12-15T08:11:15","date_gmt":"2016-12-15T02:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cmscomputer.in\/blog\/?p=7807"},"modified":"2024-03-05T16:39:01","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T11:09:01","slug":"introduction-to-unix-operating-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cmscomputer.in\/blog\/introduction-to-unix-operating-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Introduction to UNIX Operating System"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Unix is an Operating System (OS).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Unix was developed long before Windows, in 1969 at AT&amp;T Bell Labs (95%<\/div>\n<div>written in \u201cC\u201d programming language).<\/div>\n<h3>History of Unix:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1965, Bell Laboratories joined with MIT and General Electric in the development project &#8211; Multics.<\/li>\n<li>In 1969 Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Rudd Canaday, and Doug McIlroy implemented the first version of the Unix at University of California at Berkley.<\/li>\n<li>The name UNIX was given by Brian Kernighan.<\/li>\n<li>In 1989, AT&amp;T and Sun Microsystems joined together and developed system V release 4 (SVR4).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Two versions of UNIX that emerged are AT&amp;T Unix and BSD Unix.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Two of the main standards mainly in use are POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface) by IEEE and X\/open standard. X\/Open Company, Ltd. was a consortium founded by several European<\/li>\n<li>UNIX systems manufacturers in 1984 to identify and promote open standards published its specifications under the name X\/open Portability guide( XPG4).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Single UNIX Specification (SUSv3) &#8211; incorporating IEEE Std 1003.1 and ISO\/IEC 9945 and integrating the industry&#8217;s Open Systems standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Why has Unix been successful?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Application portability and scalability.<\/li>\n<li>Open System.<\/li>\n<li>Underlying operating system source code is available.<\/li>\n<li>Provides a productive environment.<\/li>\n<li>Allows multi-tasking and sharing of data.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent C development environment is built-in.<\/li>\n<li>Networking capabilities are built in.<\/li>\n<li>Very important feature of UNIX is that the source code is open , which gives a larger scope for development and debugging.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0One important advantage that results from the UNIX standard interface is application portability.<\/li>\n<li>Application portability is the ability of a single application to be executed on various types of computer hardware without being modified.<\/li>\n<li>This can be achieved if the application uses the UNIX interface to manage its hardware needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unix is an Operating System (OS).
